Efficient drilling doesn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of skillful engineering and smart tooling choices. That’s exactly how Hägglunds, a brand of Bosch Rexroth and manufacturer of direct drive systems, achieved a game-changing shift in cam ring production. By switching to CoroDrill DE10, they enabled machine automation and boosted productivity by 18 percent.

Sandvik Coromant and Hägglunds are long-standing partners with a collaboration built on continuous, open dialogue. The role of Sandvik Coromant goes far beyond tool supply. It’s about transferring knowledge, supporting operators, and identifying opportunities for long-term optimization. “We have an established way of working with Hägglunds where we explore areas for improvement,” says Mikael Carlsson, Product Application Specialist at Sandvik Coromant. “It’s a holistic approach grounded in what we call manufacturing wellness, looking at the bigger picture of skills, knowledge and technology.”

Hägglunds performs cam ring drilling in bearing steel, a notoriously difficult material when it comes to maintaining hole tolerance and good surface quality. Given the complexity of the component, the latest challenge came as no surprise. They needed to stabilize the drilling process and gain control, from the first hole to the last. But the existing drill wasn’t up to the task. “Our old tool just wasn’t durable or reliable enough. We didn’t trust it to deliver and couldn’t leave the machine unattended like we wanted to,” says Andreas Branthsson, Production Engineering Manager at Hägglunds.

Together, engineers from Sandvik Coromant and Hägglunds pinpointed what was needed: A more wear-resistant tool that could deliver repeatable results, making lights-out machining a reality without risking tool failure or component damage. The answer was CoroDrill DE10, Sandvik Coromant’s exchangeable-tip drill, launched in March 2025.

What truly sets CoroDrill DE10 apart is its patented pre-tension clamping interface. It’s the most robust design of its kind, built to stay stable when machining gets tough. The high clamping forces and excellent centering deliver straight holes and tight tolerances, and each drill body supports a superior number of tips. “What makes this drill stand out is the repeatable hole quality,” says Carlsson. “We drilled thousands of holes in testing, and the consistency was there, hole after hole.”

The benefits? Trouble-free drilling at high feeds and speeds and unmatched tool life when used with the recommended cutting data. In terms of efficiency, CoroDrill DE10 excels in more ways than one. With increased productivity comes significant energy savings, making it a resource-efficient choice. The versatile -M5 tip geometry adds plug-and-play efficiency. It’s compatible with a wide range of materials, applications and components, and when it’s time for a tip change, it’s quick and straightforward. No pilot drill or spare parts needed.

With the new drill in place, Hägglunds’ operators can finally leave the machine unattended — and return to a job well done — freeing up their time to focus on other tasks. And the newfound process security means they can increase feed rates while keeping quality intact. “The stability of the drill lets us push the machine harder without compromising quality. We increased productivity by 18 percent and doubled the time in cut per drill tip from 40 to 80 minutes. And the drill body lasts much longer,” Branthsson concludes.
