New system revolutionizes production of bipolar plates

The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU has now taken a major step toward lower costs and mass production of bipolar plates by introducing an innovative sys-tem for roll embossing: BPPflexRoll.

Fraunhofer Converting a steel mill to climate-neutral steel production

Steel production causes significant emissions of carbon dioxide. To decarbonize steel production and its high carbon dioxide emissions, Fraunhofer researchers, TS ELINO GmbH and Salzgitter AG are working on converting an existing steel mill to climate-neutral production methods.

LASER TECHNOLOGY FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF BATTERY CELLS

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen have developed innovative laser-based technologies for producing lithium-ion batteries — which, in comparison with those produced conventionally, can be charged more quickly and have a longer service lifetime.

LASER WELDING SET TO REVOLUTIONIZE STEEL CONSTRUCTION

Energy and resource efficiency are gaining ever more significance, which is why the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS has worked with its partners to develop an alternative for conventional steel construction that not only constitutes a process technology solution, but also forms the basis for hardware and laser safety. The innovative welding process will be presented on March 16 at the Hannover Messe Preview 2022 and from May 30 to June 2 at the Hannover Messe 2022 at the joint Fraunhofer booth in Hall 5, Stand A06.

CLEAN AIR AT ALL TIMES

Metal processing with lasers and plasma releases many different pollutants into the ambient air. The Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS, together with partners, has developed a filter system that efficiently removes these substances from the air. The filter can be adapted to the various materials and substances released in each case. In the future, the technology will be used in other applications, such as additive manufacturing.
