New packaging contributes to circularity

Walter sets new standards with sustainable packaging.

New packaging contributes to circularity

Machining specialist Walter is now supplying its products in packaging that consists of 95% recycled plastic, known as PCR, and is 100% recyclable. The new packaging strategy is a further step towards the company’s circularity goal of more than 90 per cent by 2030. This is just one of four sustainability goals Walter has committed to over the next few years: The company is committed to halving CO2 emissions, eliminating any harm to people, and acting transparently and ethically - in other words, always doing the right thing.

"We have set ourselves ambitious sustainability targets for 2030 that affect every area of the company. With the new packaging, we are taking the next consistent step on this path," says Gerhard Schüßler, Head of Sustainability at Walter, adding: "Furthermore, climate neutrality by 2050 is our major goal. It is therefore essential that we utilize every opportunity to effectively reduce our CO2 emissions. PCR packaging contributes to this on several levels."

Low environmental impact and good product protection
The production of the recycled plastic for the new packaging requires only half the energy compared to new plastic. This means a saving of 60 tonnes of CO2 compared to 2022, as well as reducing the use of fossil raw materials and lowering energy requirements. To reduce transport costs, the packaging will be produced not only in Germany, but also wherever Walter has distribution centers.

In addition to the sustainability aspects, the new packaging also offers advantages for Walter customers: The recycled material is just as robust as new plastic and therefore optimally protects the products against corrosion and other damage. Maximum functionality is thus combined with the best possible product protection and minimal ecological impact.

The switch to the new packaging material began in 2023 and is set to become standard for 85 per cent of Walter's products during the course of 2024.
