DMG MORI Introduces Adaptive Drilling Control for Universal Machining

DMG MORI has introduced Adaptive Drilling Control (ADC), a new technology cycle for standard drilling, deep hole drilling, and gun drilling on universal machining centers. The system transforms drilling from a parameter-based operation into a continuously monitored and actively controlled process, addressing long-standing challenges in process stability and operator dependency.

Deep hole drilling is among the most critical machining operations, where chip congestion, misalignment, cross holes, or tool breakage can lead to scrap and unplanned downtime, particularly in high-value components such as crankshafts, injection systems, turbine parts, and medical implants. As these operations increasingly move to universal machining centers, process reliability can no longer rely solely on operator experience.

ADC addresses this by using sensor-based feedback for pressure, flow, and load to regulate coolant supply and machining strategy in a closed-loop control system. Instead of fixed parameters, the process adapts in real time to material properties, tool condition, and drilling depth.

The ADC technology cycle unifies standard drilling, deep hole drilling, and gun drilling within a single workflow featuring three scalable modes: standard drilling with minimal parameter input, deep hole drilling with extended inputs, and an advanced mode for complex applications such as cross holes or pilot hole offsets. Coolant pressure and flow are automatically adjusted throughout the process.

By stabilizing chip evacuation and thermal conditions, ADC increases tool life by up to 30 percent while reducing energy consumption by up to 30 percent. The technology also supports high-pressure coolant systems above 80 bar, enabling complex drilling operations to be standardized.

Developed in collaboration with tooling and coolant partners, ADC integrates seamlessly with DMG MORI machining centers and records all process data for monitoring, quality documentation, and integration into CELOS X and factory IT systems. The technology is initially available on selected monoBLOCK, duoBLOCK, horizontal, portal, and gantry machines with Siemens and HEIDENHAIN controls and forms part of DMG MORI’s Machining Transformation (MX) strategy.
