Hurco Adds Thermal Compensation to Di Series

In the precision machining and 5-axis CNC milling sectors, Hurco now equips its Di series machines with thermal compensation as standard. The system automatically corrects heat-induced spindle growth, enabling consistent dimensional accuracy even under fluctuating temperature conditions.

Why Thermal Stability Matters in CNC Milling
Modern milling processes increasingly require tolerances in the single-digit micrometer range. In such environments, even minimal thermal expansion in the spindle can lead to measurable deviation in the X, Y and Z axes.

Heat generation during machining is unavoidable. As spindle temperatures rise, material expansion affects tool positioning and therefore part accuracy. This becomes particularly critical during long machining cycles and in series production where repeatability is essential.

Real-Time Thermal Compensation in the Di Series
Hurco’s thermal compensation system uses sensors integrated in the head assembly to monitor temperature changes in real time. The data is transmitted directly to the WinMax control system, which continuously calculates and applies positional corrections.

The correction algorithms are based on extensive testing and model-specific machine data. Compensation occurs automatically without operator intervention.

Depending on the machine model, the system can reduce the negative impact of spindle growth on component accuracy by up to 80 percent.

Suitable Applications
The integrated compensation is particularly relevant for:
  • Series production with repeatable accuracy requirements
  • Components with long machining times
  • Tight-tolerance applications
  • 5-axis machining centers
By stabilizing dimensional accuracy across varying ambient and process temperatures, the system supports consistent quality and reduces scrap rates in high-precision production environments.

Retrofit Capability
Existing Di series machines can be retrofitted with thermal compensation, depending on model, year of manufacture and software version. This allows manufacturers to upgrade machine performance without replacing installed equipment.

With thermal compensation now standard in the Di series, Hurco addresses growing market demand for consistent precision in CNC milling under real production conditions.
