Integrated positioner for robotic arc welding cells
In automotive manufacturing, heavy machinery production, and metal fabrication, robotic arc welding systems often require positioners that rotate or index workpieces to ensure optimal welding angles and consistent seam quality. Coordinating these positioners with robot motion is essential for maintaining weld integrity and cycle efficiency.

FANUC has introduced a new H-Frame welding positioner for the European market designed to simplify the specification and integration of automated arc welding systems. The positioner enables synchronised motion with six-axis industrial robots, allowing welding cells to operate with coordinated robot and workpiece movement.

The system integrates directly with FANUC robot controllers, enabling manufacturers and system integrators to deploy welding cells without relying on third-party positioner suppliers.

Dual-station design for continuous welding production
The positioner uses a dual-station H-frame configuration, a commonly used design in robotic welding cells. This layout allows welding operations to occur on one station while operators load or unload components on the opposite side.

This configuration enables:
  • Continuous automated welding cycles
  • Reduced machine idle time
  • Improved productivity through parallel operations
By separating welding and handling operations, manufacturers can shorten production cycle times while maintaining stable automated workflows.

High payload capacity for large welded structures
The floor-mounted H-Frame positioner is designed for applications involving large or heavy welded components. Two versions are available, offering maximum payload capacities of 1500 kg or 500 kg on each side.

The system also incorporates a central welding shield and offers multiple configuration options, including different turning diameters and fixture lengths, allowing users to adapt the positioner to specific component sizes and welding requirements.

Coordinated motion improves weld consistency
A key feature of the system is the synchronised movement between the robot and the positioner, controlled through the FANUC controller architecture. Coordinated motion allows the robot and the rotating workpiece to move simultaneously while maintaining consistent welding conditions.

This capability helps maintain constant surface speeds along the weld seam, which is important for achieving uniform weld penetration, bead formation, and overall weld quality in automated arc welding processes.

The indexing table also provides centralised FANUC-standard electrical and communication connections to the robot controller, simplifying system integration within robotic welding cells.

Single-supplier solution for robotic welding systems
With the introduction of the H-Frame positioner, FANUC expands its portfolio of integrated robotic welding components. The system can be deployed alongside ARC Mate welding robots, R-30𝑖B Plus controllers, and associated connectors and automation components within a unified system architecture.

According to FANUC Europe, integrating the positioner within the same ecosystem simplifies installation and maintenance while ensuring compatibility with the company’s motion control technologies and long-term spare-parts availability.

Expansion of the welding positioner range
Although the H-frame configuration is one of the most widely used welding positioner designs, certain applications may require alternative motion configurations depending on workpiece geometry and welding accessibility.

FANUC is therefore expanding its welding positioner portfolio with additional designs planned for release in 2026, including:
  • Headstock-tailstock positioners for long or asymmetric components
  • Turntable positioners for compact welding cells
These developments will complement FANUC’s existing servo-positioner range, which includes 1-axis hollow positioners, 1-axis compact positioners, and 2-axis positioners, offering greater flexibility for robotic arc welding applications across different industrial sectors.
