Complex machining operations, such as those in the aerospace and precision engineering sectors, require the synchronization of multi-axis machine tools with automated material handling. Achieving this requires high-speed data exchange between the machine's numerical control and external automation units to prevent latency, minimize cycle times, and maintain structural tolerances.
Hermle and Siemens have combined their engineering expertise to solve these integration challenges. Hermle provides the mechanical architecture and specialized robotic systems, while Siemens supplies the hardware and software control layer required for high-performance multi-axis synchronization.
Technical Configuration and Control Architecture
The implementation features the Hermle C 22 MT GEN2 5-axis mill-turn machining center, which has been equipped with the Siemens Sinumerik One control system. This control architecture serves as a digital-native platform, allowing for the deep integration of digital twin simulation, optimized path planning, and real-time monitoring of complex milling and turning operations.
For automated material handling, the systems utilize the Hermle RS 05-2 and RS 1 GEN2 robot systems. The RS 05-2 system manages workpieces weighing up to 10 kg, utilizing configurable storage modules to optimize part buffering and retrieval cycles. The updated RS 1 GEN2 system coordinates workpiece and tool handling, interfacing directly with the primary machine controller to ensure safe, continuous operation without manual intervention.
Industrial Application and Deployment
The combined industrial automation solutions are designed for demanding production environments requiring high autonomy, such as aerospace component manufacturing. By utilizing the Siemens Sinumerik One control system on the C 22 MT GEN2, operators can execute diverse machining technologies — including simultaneous milling and heavy turning — within a single setup.
The integrated solution was demonstrated at the AMB trade fair from September 15 to September 19, 2026, in Stuttgart, Germany.
